Community calendar is packed with seasonal events

HENDERSON, Ky. – Henderson will be bustling with holiday spirit this weekend on what is traditionally one of the busiest of the year for community activities.

It will start on Friday with the opening of Christmas in the Park in downtown’s historic Central Park and continue with the Henderson Merchants Christmas Parade on Saturday, the arrival of Santa Claus, a pre-parade Pancake Breakfast and Sunday afternoon’s decades-old Alice P. Taylor Candlelight Service.

Here’s a rundown of some of the holiday festivities and other events that are on the Community Calendar in the next few days and on into December:


Friday, Dec. 1

  • Zion United Church of Christ Charity Luncheon & Bake Sale, 8:30 a.m., Zion UCC, 437 First St. Bake sale from 8:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. and luncheon at 10:30 a.m. Menu: Homemade vegetable soup, ham sandwich, dessert, $8.
  • Little Rembrandts: Reindeer on Canvas, 10:30 a.m. (session 1) and 4 p.m. (session 2), Audubon Museum, for ages 3-8, along with a parent or adult. Registration required. Contact: Kim McGrew-Liggett, 270-827-1893 or kim.mcgrew@ky.gov.
  • Matthew 25 Open House & Ribbon Cutting hosted by Kyndle, 11:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m., 452 Old Corydon Road. Open house to show off expansion of offices; ribbon-cutting at noon.
  • Christmas Tree Lighting Opening of Christmas in the Park, 6 p.m., Central Park, downtown Henderson, with music by Henderson County High School Band and countdown by Mayor Steve Austin.
  • Journey to Bethlehem, 6-9 p.m., Cairo United Methodist Church, 13510 U.S. 41-Alternate. Free guided tour from Nazareth to Bethlehem, with costumed characters, animals, a marketplace and view of the Nativity. Repeats on Saturday, Dec. 2, from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. and Sunday, Dec. 3, from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.

Saturday, Dec. 2

  • Riverview School’s Annual Pancakes With Santa, 7:30 a.m. to 10 a.m. (before Christmas Parade), St. Paul’s Episcopal Church. Cost: $3 for children 12 and younger, $5 for adults, at the door. Menu: All you can eat pancakes; also, sausage, coffee, milk and orange. Santa will visit from 8 a.m. to 9:30 a.m.
  • Henderson Merchants Christmas Parade, 10 a.m., downtown Henderson, with floats, bands, walking units, Shrine units, classic cars, horses, fire units and more. Parade route: Main Street from Fifth Street to Washington Street, Washington Street to Elm Street, Elm Street back to Fifth Street. Sponsored by Henderson Shrine Club in partnership with City of Henderson and local merchants.
  • ‘Tis The Season, chili lunch and giveaway of toiletry items, stuffed animals and gently used Christmas decorations, following Christmas Parade at First United Methodist Church, 338 Third St., downtown Henderson.
  • Journey to Bethlehem, 3 p.m. to 7 p.m., Cairo United Methodist Church, 13510 U.S. 41-Alternate. Free guided tour from Nazareth to Bethlehem, with costumed characters, animals, a marketplace and view of the Nativity. Repeats on Sunday, Dec. 3, from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.
  • Downtown Robards Christmas Tree Lighting, 5 p.m. with chili and hot dogs in the fire barn; tree lighting at 6:15 p.m. followed by visits with Santa.

Sunday, Dec. 3

  • Journey to Bethlehem, 1 p.m. to 4 p.m., Cairo United Methodist Church, 13510 U.S. 41-Alternate. Free guided tour from Nazareth to Bethlehem, with costumed characters, animals, a marketplace and view of the Nativity.
  • Alice P. Taylor Candlelight Service, 4 p.m., St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, 5 S. Green St., ecumenical service of sacred music that been a community event for decades. Music by instrumental ensemble, Henderson County High School Chamber Choir, organist and vocal musicians. Reception to follow concert.

Monday, Dec. 4

  • 9th Annual Henderson Holiday Hero Blood Drive, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., Hoffman Hall at Presbyterian Church of Henderson, 100 S. Main St.
  • Taste of Christmas, 4:30 p.m.,  Rookies Banquet Hall hosted by Volunteer & Information Center with food samples from local restaurants and a silent auction.

Tuesday, Dec. 5

  • Henderson County High School Christmas Choir Concert, 7 p.m., Preston Arts Center, Henderson Community College.

Wednesday, Dec. 6

  • University of Evansville Orchestra and Choir Holiday Pops Concert, 7:30 p.m., Preston Arts Center. Admission is free but tickets must be reserved. Donation of one canned food item to benefit Henderson Christian Community Outreach is suggested.

Thursday, Dec. 7

  • Henderson County High School Christmas Band Concert, 7:30 p.m., Preston Arts Center.

Saturday, Dec. 9

  • American Cancer Society Homes for the Holiday Home Tour, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tickets: $25, available at Third Street House, The Gold Mine, Victoria’s Boutique. Homes: Ron & Penny Henry, 535 S. Elm St.; Jesse & Teresia Johnston, 930 S. Green St.; Jamie Liles, 705 S. Main St.; Mark & Monica Hargis, 401 S. Main St.; The Jarvis House, 717 N. Main St.; L&N Bed and Breakfast, 327 N. Sunday, Dec. 10

  • "The Children's Nutcracker", 3 p.m. Preston Arts Center, performed by Children's Center of Dance Education. Timeless ballet relating a little girl's journey into a magical world told in a condensed version suitable for children. Tickets: $15. Box office: 270-831-9800.
  • A Candle Light Christmas, 5 p.m. Community Baptist Church. Story of Christmas told in music, word and media; presented by Community Baptist, First Christian Church and St. Paul’s Episcopal Church. Reception to follow.

Monday, Dec. 11

  • Christmas at the Library, 7:30 p.m., Henderson County Public Library with crafts, snacks, Santa and Mrs. Claus.

Tuesday, Dec. 12

  • Annual South Heights Christmas Parade, 9 a.m., starting at South Heights School, 1199 Madison St., with hundreds of students, fire trucks, floats.

Wednesday, Dec. 13

  • Christmas on Letcher, 6 p.m.,lighting of 15-foot Christmas tree at Audubon Kids Zone, plus caroling, hot chocolate and snacks.

Saturday, Dec. 16

  • Candy Cane Hunt, 2 p.m. Disc Golf Course at Atkinson Park. City of Henderson Parks and Recreation Department.
  • Home Free Christmas Concert, 8 p.m., Preston Arts Center, presented by Henderson Area Arts Alliance. Box office: 270-831-9800.

Sunday, Dec. 17

  • Handel/Rutter Concert, 3 p.m. First United Methodist Church, a selection of pieces from Handel’s Messiah and composer John Rutter pieces presented by a choir of community singers.
